Badrinath Temple is an admired shrine and it is one of the parts of the Chardham of Uttarakhand. It is also considered to be a part of the Chardham of India. It is situated on the banks of Alaknanda between the Nar and the Narayan peaks. This temple is the largest and the most honored among the Panch Badri.
It is believed that the four pilgrimages were built in the four corners of the country by Adi Guru Shankaracharya. This is today known as the Chardham of India. This was built in the 8th century for reviving the prestige that the Hindu religion had lost. Another motto of this was to unite the country.
The term Badri means Berry that used to grow in large numbers in the place where the Badrinath is situated. The word Nath means Vishnu. As per the Hindu Mythology, Lord Vishnu did a very long penance in this area. During this time, Goddess Laxmi took the form of berries in order to protect him against the harsh climate.
Every year between the months of April and November, the Badrinath temple remains open. It is opened on the day of Basanth Panchami. The Mandir Commitee closes this on the Vijaya Dashami day.
During the winters, the Utsav Murti of Lord Badrinath is kept in the Narsimha temple at Joshinath and worshipped there. Apart from this the other four subsidiary Badris are referred to as Panch Badri, Bhavishya Badri, Yogdhyan Badri, Adi Badri and Bridha Badri.
A number of functions and festivals take place in this mandir. The most important festivals include Krishna Janmashtmi, Badri Kedar Utsav, and Mata Murti ka Mela.
